The National Basketball Association, or NBA for short, is a professional North American basketball league. It is made up of 30 teams, or “franchises.” Of these 30 franchises, all but one are located the United States. The Toronto Raptures are the exception since they are based out of Canada; but they are every bit a part of the National Basketball Association.

In a regular season, each team plays 82 games, thus accumulating a total of 1,230 games played within the entire league. In the 2016 and 2017 regular home season alone, the average game attendance among all teams was estimated to be around 17,884, making the total attendance within the entire league almost 22 million.

🏀 The AAB and the NBL

In the beginning, there were two professional basketball leagues in the United States: The American Association of Basketball (AAB) and their rival, the National Basketball League (NBL). The AAB was established in 1946, but just a few short years later in 1949, they merged with the NBL to form what we now know as the National Basketball Association (NBA).

🏀 Annual Revenues

The modern-day National Basketball Association generates more than 7 billion U.S. dollars in revenue as a whole enterprise, per season. In fact, seasonal revenues were estimated to be around 245 million U.S. dollars per team between 2016 and 2017. Also during this period, there were only 3 teams reported to have generated more than 300 million U.S. dollars in annual revenue. These teams were the New York Knicks, the Los Angeles Lakers and the Golden State Warriors. There were only two teams, the Philadelphia 76ers and the Milwaukee Bucks, which generated less than 200 million U.S. dollars in annual revenue during the 2016 and 2017 seasons.

🏀 Most Valuable Teams

Currently, the New York Knicks are the most valuable franchise in the NBA, with an estimated net worth of 3.6 billion U.S. dollars. However, all other NBA teams have a total value that is over 1 billion U.S. dollars, making them all quite valuable when put into perspective. The New Orleans Pelicans would be last on the list in terms of annual revenue and total value, with an estimated value of 1 million U.S. dollars.

🏀 Average League Values

The average values of the NBA league are estimated to be around 1.66 billion U.S. dollars. This average is put into perspective when compared to the National Football League’s estimated value of 2.52 billion U.S. dollars, the Major League Baseball’s estimated value of 1.54 billion U.S. dollars, and in the National Hockey League’s estimated value of 594 million U.S. dollars.
