What is Vodka?

Vodka is made by the distillation of plant matter that is rich in starch or sugar. Plant matter commonly includes various types of grains, such as corn, rye, and wheat, or other foodstuffs, like potatoes, grapes, and soybeans. Since its origin, it has been used in many applications other than beverages, including several health remedies, antiseptics, anesthetics, beauty aids, and of course, cleaning.

Why Does Vodka Work?

Vodka has a high alcohol content; traditionally, 30 to 40% by volume. In fact, the alcohol content is so high that it can be used as a cleaning agent for contaminants like germs, dirt, grime, mold, mildew, and more. The alcohol content works well as a sterilizer for all kinds of surfaces, such as countertops, fixtures, windows, floors, mirrors, and even fabrics!

Choosing a Brand

When it comes to choosing a vodka to clean your house with, there is no need to reach for the top shelf brands you prefer for your Screw Drivers and Dirty Martinis. For cleaning and sterilization purposes, you can stick with a basic, generic brand of vodka. The quality of the liquor will not have any influence on its cleaning abilities, so reserve the good stuff for yourself. On the other hand, organic vodka comes highly recommended for the job.

How to Use It

Get yourself a clean, plastic spray bottle to start; then fill it with your choice of vodka.

For mold and mildew, simply spray the vodka on the affected area and allow it to sit for 10 minutes. Then use a cleaning brush or sponge to scrub the mold and mildew away. Then just rinse the surface with clean water. To clean plumbing fixtures like faucets, drains, door knobs, and more, just spray vodka onto a cloth or paper towel and use some good old-fashioned elbow grease to polish them up.

For mirrors, windows, and other glass surfaces, spray the solution onto the surface and then buff away the blemishes with a paper towel or bunched up newspaper. Then finish by polishing with a microfiber cloth to reveal a beautiful shine.

To refresh clothing without tossing them into the washing machine, dilute your vodka with water, and then mist the fabric with your solution. As it dries, the alcohol eliminates any residual odors, like smoke and grease, without leaving behind the smell of vodka. This is a great trick to refresh smelly work uniforms or aprons, as well as, pillows, cushions, curtains, and bedding. Furthermore, it is better than Febreeze® because there are no harsh chemicals damaging the integrity of your clothing!

To remove stickers and adhesives, just spray a solution of pure vodka directly onto the sticky area. Allow it to sit for a few minutes and then wipe the surface clean with a rag or melamine sponge (i.e. Mr. Clean Magic Eraser®). Price tags and labels will no longer be a bother!

Should I Use Silver or Gold Tequila to Make a Margarita?

Sports Page Lounge 317-897-7449

Sports Page Lounge 317-897-7449

Summer weather is here to stay, so now we can look forward to a great season of picnics, grilling out, and of course, fun in the sun! And as most of us know, all outdoor fun is made even better with delicious, cold, frothy drinks! One of the most popular summertime cocktails is the classic margarita, which is traditionally made with fresh lime juice, tequila, and orange liqueur. Served blended or over ice, they offer a perfect marriage of sweet, sour, and salty. Best of all, they can come in an infinite array of flavors, such as strawberry, mango, jalapeño, basil, and much more!

However, the confusion about light and dark tequila, and which is the proper choice for a margarita, is a mutual problem among novice margarita makers. If you love margaritas, but have no clue which kind of tequila to use, you are not alone.

Continue reading to learn the difference between silver and gold tequila, and some tips on using them to make margaritas.

Gold Tequila

Gold tequila is colloquially referred to as dark tequila, or aged tequila. This version is made by distilling the juice from a blue agave plant and turning it into a liquor. Most dark tequila brands that are not aged are not 100% pure agave. They are usually mixes that only contain around 51% agave tequila.

Dark tequila can get its color from two different places: wood barrels or caramel additives. For instance, Reposado (rested) in 200-liter white oak barrels for at least 2 months, while Añejo (aged) tequila is aged for 12 months. Reposado and Añejo are the only tequilas that have to be aged according to regulations.

Aside from wood barrels, the dark color can also come from caramel coloring and sugar that is added to the batch before fermentation. Most of the time, these additives are for the purpose of mimicking the gold hue of high quality aged tequilas. However, they are also attributed to giving the tequila a smoother taste, which is why they are the preferred choice for taking shots.

Silver Tequila

Silver tequila is also known as light, white, or blanco tequila since it has a clear, transparent color similar to vodka or gin. It is distilled in stainless steel containers, and can be either 100% pure agave or a mix. Similar to dark tequila, it is derived from the blue agave plant and distilled into a liquor, but the rather than aging, it is usually bottled right after distillation. In fact, it is rarely ever aged, and if so, only for a very short amount of time. This makes many tequila drinkers believe that it has a harsher taste, given that it is not aged like higher quality tequilas.

For Margaritas

When it comes to making a great, classic margarita, the truth is that both light and dark tequilas are well-suited for the job; it really comes down to personal preference. But if you were to ask the professionals, they will likely tell you to go for the Gold. Gold tequila tends to have sweeter notes and a smoother finish, making them especially perfect for frozen margaritas.

A Unique and Refreshing Beer Cocktail Recipe for Spring

Cold Beer at Sports Page Lounge!

Cold Beer at Sports Page Lounge!

France calls it a French Monaco; but here in the states, we simply know it as a sweet and tart springtime beer cocktail! This uniquely delicious recipe is a treat for both men and women who love a good lager.

Continue reading to learn this tasty recipe, and give it a try the next time you crave something cold and carbonated!

Understanding the Ingredients

There are 3 primary ingredients that make a proper French Monaco. These can be altered and adjusted to taste, or depending on what you have on hand; however, if you have a chance to make a batch from scratch, it is best prepared with the traditional ingredients. These include lemonade, lager, and grenadine.

Although you can use any style lager and the common red syrup you used to put in your Shirley Temples, it is meant to be constructed with a top-shelf lager and a premium grenadine made from real pomegranates. The French prefer Stella Artois®, which is also the recommended lager to use for this recipe. And as for the grenadine, it is recommended to use a real pomegranate syrup, such as the one made by Liber & Co.®. You may also use a different version of pomegranate syrup, but the authentic version is made with real grenadine.

What You Will Need:

2 Ounces of Lemonade (preferably made from scratch)
6 Ounces of Lager
1 Ounce of Real Grenadine
Long Bar Spoon

How to Make a French Monaco:

Start with a tall glass, such as a highball glass or a 16 oz. beer mug.
Add 1 oz. of real grenadine to the glass.
Add 2 oz. of lemonade.
Top the glass with your lager.
Gently stir your concoction one or two times.
Garnish with a lemon wheel if you have one!

The Indiana Pacers just had a commendable win over the Cleveland Cavaliers last week in a game that literally had everyone on their feet until the final buzzer! With several more exhilarating games like this ahead of us, the buildup of anticipation to see who will be the ultimate NBA champions this year can be virtually unbearable!

So while you anxiously wait for the next playoff game to air, entertain yourself with a fun and informative overview of the National Basketball Association, below. Then share these fun NBA facts with friends and family, and impress them with your knowledge of this esteemed and histrionic professional North American basketball league!

Watch Sports TV at Sports Page Lounge!

The National Basketball Association, or NBA for short, is a professional North American basketball league. It is made up of 30 teams, or “franchises.” Of these 30 franchises, all but one are located the United States. The Toronto Raptures are the exception since they are based out of Canada; but they are every bit a part of the National Basketball Association.

In a regular season, each team plays 82 games, thus accumulating a total of 1,230 games played within the entire league. In the 2016 and 2017 regular home season alone, the average game attendance among all teams was estimated to be around 17,884, making the total attendance within the entire league almost 22 million.

🏀 The AAB and the NBL

In the beginning, there were two professional basketball leagues in the United States: The American Association of Basketball (AAB) and their rival, the National Basketball League (NBL). The AAB was established in 1946, but just a few short years later in 1949, they merged with the NBL to form what we now know as the National Basketball Association (NBA).

🏀 Annual Revenues

The modern-day National Basketball Association generates more than 7 billion U.S. dollars in revenue as a whole enterprise, per season. In fact, seasonal revenues were estimated to be around 245 million U.S. dollars per team between 2016 and 2017. Also during this period, there were only 3 teams reported to have generated more than 300 million U.S. dollars in annual revenue. These teams were the New York Knicks, the Los Angeles Lakers and the Golden State Warriors. There were only two teams, the Philadelphia 76ers and the Milwaukee Bucks, which generated less than 200 million U.S. dollars in annual revenue during the 2016 and 2017 seasons.

🏀 Most Valuable Teams

Currently, the New York Knicks are the most valuable franchise in the NBA, with an estimated net worth of 3.6 billion U.S. dollars. However, all other NBA teams have a total value that is over 1 billion U.S. dollars, making them all quite valuable when put into perspective. The New Orleans Pelicans would be last on the list in terms of annual revenue and total value, with an estimated value of 1 million U.S. dollars.

🏀 Average League Values

The average values of the NBA league are estimated to be around 1.66 billion U.S. dollars. This average is put into perspective when compared to the National Football League’s estimated value of 2.52 billion U.S. dollars, the Major League Baseball’s estimated value of 1.54 billion U.S. dollars, and in the National Hockey League’s estimated value of 594 million U.S. dollars.

Where Do Drinks Get Their Names?

You may know what’s in them; but do you know where they got their name from?

Popular staples in the bar industry like Bloody Mary’s, Manhattans, Screw Drivers, and Old Fashions certainly have names that make you question their origins. Below you can read through a list of popular cocktails just like these to learn a brief description of how they got their names. Then you can share this thought-provoking information with your peers the next time you gather together for a round or two!

🍹 Bloody Mary

Bloody Marys are tangy, spicy cocktails made from a tomato juice and vodka base, and mixed with a variation of spices and ingredients like salt, pepper, garlic, lemon juice, celery, Worcestershire, and more. Although the origin of the name has many stories and remains quite ambiguous, most agree that it is named after Queen Mary I of England, who was dubbed “Bloody Mary” for attempting to re-establish the Catholic Church.

🍸 Cosmopolitan

Also known as a “Cosmo” for short, the Cosmopolitan was made famous in the television series, “Sex in the City.” However, the Cosmopolitan was influencing the bar industry long before its red carpet debut. Primarily constructed with vodka, triple sec, and cranberry juice, this popular martini-style drink’s name is said to have come from Neal Murray of the Cork & Cleaver steak house in Minneapolis in 1975. Supposedly, he added a splash of cranberry juice to a Kamikaze and said, “How Cosmopolitan.”

🍸 Dirty Martini

The Dirty Martini is a simple and sophisticated cocktail for vodka and gin drinkers. Primarily made with vodka or gin, vermouth, olive brine or juice, and garnished with green bar olives, this cocktail has a name that suggests something “unclean” or perhaps even “unscrupulous.” But the real origin of its name actually unknown. It is suggested that it describes the muddied, clouded appearance the olive brine gives the liquor.

🍹 Long Island Ice Tea

A Long Island Ice Tea traditionally contains vodka, tequila, light rum, triple sec, gin, and a splash of cola. It makes sense that this all-inclusive cocktail began in Long Island, New York; right? Well, this is actually true. A man by the name Robert “Rosebud” Butt claims he invented the drink in 1972 after entering a contest while working at the Oak Beach Inn in Long Island, New York.

🍹 Mai Tai

Mai Tai drinks are commonly made with white and dark rum, orange curacao, fresh lime juice, and almond flavoring syrup. These Polynesian-style ingredients may be what inspired the name. A man named Victor J. Bergeron claimed to invent the drink in 1944 when he made it for his friends who were visiting from Tahiti. In Tahitian language, “Maita’i” means “good.”

🥃 Manhattan

Universally made with whiskey, sweet vermouth and bitters, the Manhattan is a classic bar drink. Although the origin is unclear, it is said that the drink was created at the Manhattan Club in New York City in the early 1870’s for a banquet in honor of presidential candidate, Samuel J. Tilden. People began calling this drink the “Manhattan cocktail” after the club.

🥃 Old Fashion

An Old Fashion is not exactly what the name implies. It is made by muddling sugar with bitters, then adding whiskey or brandy, and finished with a twist of citrus rind. But the ingredients are not where the name comes from. Traditionally, the Old Fashion is served in a short, round, tumbler-like glass called an “Old Fashion glass.” This is where the name likely comes from.

🥂 Screw Driver

There are several stories about this popular breakfast-style cocktail and its origins. The most supported story regarding its name suggests that it began with American oil workers working in the Persian Gulf during the 1920’s. They didn’t have a regular steel spoon to stir their drink, so they used whatever they had on hand that worked; and a screwdriver was always the most reliable tool nearby.

What is the Expected Timeline for Beginner Level Homebrewing?

If you are interested in homebrewing your own beer, but concerned about the amount of time you will have to commit to the process, this blog can help you. Continue reading to learn the basic steps involved in the standard beginner-level homebrewing practice, as well as, how long you can expect it all to take.

Cold Beer at Sports Page Lounge!

Cold Beer at Sports Page Lounge!

Fundamental Homebrewing Steps

Homebrewing beer can range in nature, from simple and straightforward to highly complex and elaborate. This of course depends on various factors, such as level of expertise, available resources and technologies, ambition, origination, creativity, and more. It is a true science that requires dedication, practice, studying, money, and more.
As a beginner brewer, you will need to learn everything you can about the basic steps involved in the overall process, starting with cooking the wort and ending with bottling your concoction.

The four basic steps of homebrewing typically include:

➀ Cooking the Wort (pronounced wert)
➁ Fermentation
➂ Aging and Maturation
➃ Bottling

Typical Homebrewing Timeline

As a beginner, you can expect the overall homebrewing timeline to start on brewing day and end when your beer is done conditioning. This usually take 2 to 3 weeks, depending on how long you want your beer to condition.

The first day is brewing day, which will require 3 to 4 hours of work. On brewing day, you will need to disinfect your equipment, brew and cool the wort, add the yeast to your wort (this is called “pitching the yeast”), and seal up your fermenter.

The next 6 days are for fermentation, in which the yeast will convert the sugars into alcohol and Carbon dioxide. This cycle usually takes at least 7 days, so make sure you are patient during the conditioning process, which you will learn about below.

Once the fermentation process is complete, it is time for bottling day. This should be exactly 7 days from brewing day. So if you started on Saturday, your bottling day should take place the following Saturday. Set aside the same amount of time for bottling, between 3 to 4 hours.

Once you are through with bottling your beer, dedicate the next 14 days for the conditioning process. Just wait patiently and let the yeast continue to do its job! Two weeks is the recommended minimum time for conditioning homebrewed beer.

After you have waited patiently for a few weeks, your beer is ready to drink! Eventually, you can expand your homebrewing enterprise by experimenting with new ingredients and equipment. When you get to this level, it is recommended to implement a secondary fermentation process of two weeks. Extra aging will bring out a whole other level of flavor, quality, and mouth feel.

5 Fun and Delicious Virgin Cocktail Recipes

Skipping on the alcohol tonight? No problem! There are several tasty and delicious non-alcoholic versions of your favorite cocktails and mixed drinks. Whether you are expecting, watching your intake, or looking for some fun ideas for under-agers, these mock-tail recipes are the way to go!

Sports Page Lounge 317-897-7449

Try a Non-Alcoholic Roy Rogers! Just Cola & Grenadine!

Virgin Margarita

For those who love a festive cocktail that bites back a little, but prefers to forgo the tequila, virgin margaritas are the perfect choice! If you are making these yourself, be sure to check the label on pre-made, store-bought margarita sour mix. Some products contain a minimal amount of alcohol. If you want a true virgin cocktail, choose a sour mix that is 100% non-alcoholic. You can also make your own sour mix with fresh limes, lemons, and simple syrup. To make a virgin margarita, simply replace tequila with club soda or lemonade, and combine with margarita sour mix. Don’t forget the salted rims!

Recipe:
⇀ 2 oz. Lemonade
⇀ 2 oz. Virgin Sour Mix
⇀ Salt Rim of Glass
Garnish with Lime Wheel!

Virgin Cosmopolitan

The classic comso contains citrus-flavored vodka and orange-flavored liqueur (triple sec). If you prefer a virgin version of this popular cocktail, simply replace the citrus vodka with lemonade and the orange-flavored liqueur with orange juice. Then add the fresh squeezed lime juice and cranberry juice to finish it off! If you want to add some flair, serve it in a martini glass!

Recipe:
⇀ ½ oz. OJ
⇀ 1 ½ oz. Lemonade
⇀ ½ oz. Fresh lime juice
⇀ 1 oz. Cranberry juice
Garnish with Lime Wheel!

Shirley Temple

This is a delightful drink because of its pretty color and sweet flavors. The alcoholic version of this mocktail is called The Dirty Shirley, which contains vodka or white rum. But if you would like the alcohol-free version, simply combine grenadine (non-alcoholic sweet and tart bar syrup), cherry juice, and clear soda together for a delicious sweet treat. Clear sodas that work well in Shirley Temples include lemon-lime soda, ginger ale, and club soda. For a boy version, combine cola with grenadine to make a Roy Rogers!

Recipe:
⇀ Glass of Clear Soda
⇀ Splash of Grenadine
Garnish With a Maraschino Cherry!

Virgin Strawberry Daiquiri

Daiquiris are popular blended drinks that can easily be altered and enjoyed without alcohol. They come in all sorts of flavors, but strawberry seems to be the most popular. Traditional daiquiris are made with rum or vodka, but you can forgo the alcohol and simply enjoy the frozen strawberry slush instead. Virgin daiquiris are probably the easiest and most versatile mocktail to make since they are essentially smoothies.

Recipe:
⇀ ½ oz. Simple Syrup
⇀ 1 oz. Lime juice
⇀ 1 Cup Strawberries or Strawberry Puree
Blend With Ice Until Smooth! Garnish With Maraschino® Cherries

Virgin Mary

While many might assume that a Bloody Mary without vodka is just tomato juice, this is far from the truth. You can create a non-alcoholic version of this classic morning cocktail without sacrificing flavor! A Bloody Mary contains many other ingredients aside from alcohol and tomato juice, so it is the perfect virgin drink if you are looking for great taste. Just like a daiquiri, all you have to do is forgo the vodka to create a delicious Bloody Mary mocktail!

Recipe:
⇀ 3 oz. Tomato Juice (Sub vegetable juice for added zest)
⇀ ½ oz. Lemon Juice
⇀ Dash of Worcestershire Sauce
⇀ Dash of Hot Sauce
⇀ Dash of Celery Salt
⇀ Salt & Pepper
Garnish With a Strip of Bacon, a Shrimp Cocktail Skewer, Celery Stick, and Green Olives!
